Active Eastleigh Project 2008
The Council applied for a grant to support the
development and implementation of new physical activity initiatives
targeted at adults across the Borough. The key focus was to
develop a pilot workplace activity project which if successful
could be used as a model of good practice and promoted to
workplaces across the Borough. It was decided that Eastleigh
Borough Council with a staff of over 500 would provide a good base
upon which to develop the pilot.
In May 2007 the Health and Community Team joined forces with
several other units to develop a project which aimed to increase
staff participation in physical activity.
To help inform the project design and to establish a baseline of
current activity levels a questionnaire was distributed to all
staff. The information provided by the survey led to a number of
recommendations.
An activity week was planned for the week beginning
2nd June 2008. Over fifty activities were offered
which included Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates and Marine Commando. In
line with comments made through the staff survey and to encourage
as many staff to take part as possible, most activities were held
before work, at lunchtime and after work.
Alongside the activity week staff were also
given the opportunity to participate in the Global Corporate
Challenge Walk the World initiative taking place from May through
to September. Seven EBC teams involving a total of 49 staff
entered.
Approximately 140 staff took part. All
staff participating in the Active Eastleigh Project were encouraged
to complete an evaluation form online to determine the future of
the project.
The project group is developing an action plan to develop the
project further.
