Food Waste Collections
Did You Know?
-
£10 billion is spent on buying and then throwing away
good food every year in the UK
-
We throw away 4.1 million tonnes of food waste every
year, all of this could be avoided
-
One quarter of this is untouched and
unopened!!!
-
Food waste can form up to 30% of the average rubbish bin
contents
This level of food waste can cost the average family
between £400 and £600 a year. It really is time to look
in your bins and see how you can save a small fortune!
For the food waste that can not be avoided, Eastleigh Borough
Council have decided to do something useful with it!
We are now collecting this seperately for composting. Until
now food waste has been buried in landfill or incinerated
but Eastleigh Borough Council hope to make this a thing of the
past!
From the beginning of December 2006 trials were carried out
to enable some residents to have their kitchen waste collected for
composting from the kerbside! The two trials were a great
sucess and the scheme is now offered to 10,000 households across
the borough. Plans are in place to extend the service to
the centre of Eastleigh during the Autumn followed by Bishopstoke,
Fair Oak and Horton Heath soon after. The remainder of the
borough will be scheduled in due course
As a result of the changes, households will no longer have to
dispose of their kitchen waste into the black bin. Instead, they
will be able to put their food waste - including peelings, bones,
tea bags, eggshells and shredded paper - into a new brown
kitchen waste bin ready for its weekly collection. Each
participating home has a smaller kitchen caddy and a
trial pack of liners they can use to store the waste in before
transferring it to the new brown kerbside kitchen waste
bin.
This waste is then processed through an indoor
composting facility to produce a soil conditioner.
