The Planning Portal

The Planning Portal is intended to be the first point of call for anyone who wants to find out about the planning system in England and Wales. It is aimed at everyone, from central government and local authorities to planning professionals and the lay person.

The Planning Portal is a vast source of information for all aspects of the planning process. Here are some links to sections which you may find useful.

The Guide section provides a brief introduction to the planning system and some explanation of why planning controls are important and necessary.

It includes general guidance about the kinds of work for which you need to apply for planning permission and those for which you do not. It is intended for both householders and business people.

The Study section is designed to help people to teach or learn about town and country planning. It is a useful resource for teachers and students of Planning and those considering or pursuing a career in town and country planning.

The Research section of the Portal is aimed at planning professionals and those with an in depth interest in planning policy and reform. You can obtain information on many issues including the Government's Planning Reform Programme, Parliamentary answers and statements on planning matters and you can view copies of Planning Policy.

The Appeals section provides information and guidance on the Appeals process. If you seek permission to carry out works to your property and your application is not decided within a set period or you get a decision from your local council that you disagree with, you have the right to appeal

FAQ The Planning Portal operates a frequently asked questions (FAQ) database so that users can find solutions to common questions and submit new queries to the support team for an answer.
