Prohibition of Driving
There are various types of
'Prohibition of Driving' Orders. These may be made to prohibit all
vehicles or certain classes of vehicle only from using a road for
all or part of the time. An exemption can also be made for example
for buses or cyclists.
Except for
Access
'Except for Access' Orders have
been used in various roads in the Borough. All motor vehicles
are generally prohibited unless the driver requires access to a
property or for any other business on that particular road.
Permanent Road Closure
This is used to close one end of a road to prevent “rat
running”. It is however a very controversial matter and requires a
Traffic Regulation Order. Land acquisition is often also required
to allow for the provision of a turning circle for vehicles.
Advantages:
- Reduced through traffic;
- Reduces the width of carriageway pedestrians have to
cross;
- Can incorporate cycle by pass allowing cycles to use the
route.
Disadvantages:
- Can increase emergency service response time;
- Often a very expensive process
- Can make journeys longer for residents;
- Forces vehicles onto other routes – these are often other
residential roads.
One-Way and No Right / Left Turn
One-way orders can be used to improve safety on narrow roads
where conflict between road users occurs. A restriction on a right
or left turning manoeuvre can be used to prevent “rat running” and
remove danger at some junctions where visibility is restricted from
the side road or risk of rear-end shunts on the major route is
high.
