Welcome to Eastleigh Borough Council's Schools Section where you can find out all you need to know about recycling for you and your school!!

Here at Eastleigh Borough Council we have loads of fun ways to tell you and your school about recycling! From demonstrations to competitions we know of loads of ways to go 'Wild with Waste'!!

Below are some of our ideas but if you would like to know more then contact the recycling team on Tel :023 8068 8440.

Waste Audits

See whats in your bin!!

  • Sorting a schools wasteIf you would like to see whats in your bin and find out what you can recycle then we will come and carry out a waste audit with you!!
  • Rubbish from the school classrooms/ staff room and kitchen are collected and tipped on the floor of the hall for sorting.
  • The pupils (wearing appropriate protective outfits) then sorted the rubbish into the various different types of material.

  • The pupils are often amazed at how much rubbish is generated from their school on one day so set themselves the task of reducing their waste by 50%.

  • Children in protective suitsThis is a rather ambitious target but nonetheless we aim for the pupils to introduce measures, which they feel may have an impact on the amount thrown away.

  • These included the ' paper monster' which is located near the photocopier so scrap paper can be stored for re-use and the introduction of fruit buckets so unwanted apple cores/banana skins can be composted in the schools compost bin.

  • The Recycling Team then re-audit the school's waste a month or so on to rate their sucess.

Pilot Education Scheme

We are currently running a Pilot Waste Education scheme with 8 schools within the borough.  The aim of this project is to convey the importance of recycling to the next generation of recyclers.

We are hoping that teaching the children now will see future recycling habits increase.

The project will offer the schools a variety of ways to help portray this important message.  An education toolkit will be available for use in the classroom.  Designed by the Minstead Study Centre who provide specialist educational knowledge in order to tie activities into the National Curriculum

The Recycle for Hampshire website will incorporate a special area designed for children, which can also be used by teachers and parents wishing to promote the recycling message.

Other benefits of participating in the pilot programme include regular newsletters, competitions and a resource library including a toolkit which will be able to be loaned out to schools.  Also scheduled for this pilot study is a programme of outreach visits to schools over January to March 2006 by the Minstead Study Centre whose aim will be to demonstrate the value of a sustained approach to waste education.

It is hoped that the user friendly options, constant communication and fun competitions will raise the profile of recycling and boost enthusiasm to recycle both at school and at home leading to a change in the behaviour of adults in the future.

Vehicle Demonstrations

We offer the opportunity of Vehicle Demonstrations to all schools and feel they give the children a great insight into how the street care vehicles operate, their purpose and importance. This demonstration is combined with a talk on the importance of street care, recycling and other important waste issues
