An Active, Supportive Community
A sustainable community is one that feels
able to influence decision making. It will also have many
different supportive networks of people to informally care for
those less able individuals within the community.
Doing your bit
- Volunteering offers interesting and rewarding
opportunities to help society and the environment. It can
give valuable work experience for those looking for work and offers
great flexibility to fit around other personal commitments
- Sympathetically checking that elderly or frail
neighbours are OK, for example if curtains are left undrawn, or
milk is left on the doorstep.
- Joining a community group, such as a local
Residents Association or interest group.
- offering lifts (to the Doctors, Hospital or
medical facilities) to those without a car and who find public
transport difficult or too expensive
- Giving to charity, especially via Gift Aid
or Give As You Earn (so that the charities also get any tax back as
well)
What the Council is Doing
The Community Development Team at the Council
works with various sections of the local community, as well as
individuals, for example by offering grants to community
groups.
