Sustainable
Development Outcomes
To bring about sustainable
development it helps to have some outcomes to work towards and
better understand what it means, such as those shown below:
Health
- Is more than the prevention
of ill health. It is a sense of general well being. In
order to be healthy, we need access to good food, clean
water, adequate housing and fuel at reasonable cost, as well as to
feel safe, with good social contacts and a balanced
lifestyle.
Crime
- The fear of
crime bullying and persecution as well as reducing crime
itself will enhance the environment and help to lead to good
health through reduced stress and violence.
Skills
- People's skills,
knowledge and access to information are maximized in order for them
to participate fully in decision making affecting their community
and fulfill their full potential.
Community -
The protection and enhancement of the local community
and cultural identity, with opportunities to develop culture and
leisure should be readily available to all. All sections of
the community should be involved in decision making
processes.
Economy
- A local scale
provides satisfying and rewarding work, which does not damage the
environment at any level and aims to reduce poverty and economic
disadvantages.
Pollution
- Properly designing facilities and implementing services can
reduce people's reliance on car use and reduce pollution to levels
that do not damage natural systems.
Resources- Reusing materials and
previously used land or buildings reduces the need to extract and
use new materials each time, maximising resources available for the
future.
Energy
- Should be used in an efficient way to minimize the amount
needed. It should then be obtained from a renewable source wherever
possible.
Waste
- Shouldd first be
minimized, then reused and recovered through recycling, composting
or energy recovery. Any final disposal following these steps must
be sustainable.
Wildlife and landscape
- Diversity
of wildlife and natural habitats should
be conserved and enhanced including archaeological, historic
sites and outstanding landscapes. This can be achieved by locating
urban areas and town centers within existing boundaries.
