Education and Life Long Learning
Life long learning, informal and
formal education, skills sharing and training are vital if people
and communities are to be able to make considered decisions about
their lives. A well educated community, in the widest sense, will
be more empowered to take part in local decisions about their
community; they will be able to be more economically active with
wider social interactions and they will be better able to
understand how their own lifestyles, behaviours and attitudes
affect other people locally but also globally.
Educating people about
Sustainability itself is a challenge as the interconnectedness of
the topic makes it complex to explain. Hopefully these
Sustainability web pages will help increase understanding.
Doing your bit
- You're already "doing your bit" by reading and
researching these pages and the whole of the Internet has a wealth
of information about Sustainability related topics. There are
hundreds of books available via local libraries, magazines to
subscribe to (or read whilst in the library) and interest groups to
join if you wish.
- In schools, Citizenship forms part of the
National Curriculum and many Sustainability related topics are
covered this way, as well as in individual subject areas such as
geography, science, economics, sociology, etc. If you are of school
age, there are many ways to get more involved in sustainability
related topics. You could be an Energy or Recycling Monitor for
example, switching off unwanted lights and recycling/reusing
paper.
- If you are an older teen or adult who has left
school, you may have left formal education behind but you don't
need to stop learning. There are interesting programmes on TV and
radio and there are many adult education courses offered by local
colleges.
What the Council is Doing
The Council is not the Local Education Authority (that's
Hampshire County Council) but we work with local schools and
colleges in many ways. Some examples are:
