Sustainability

This term is used to express the need to balance environmental, economic and social factors if we are all to live in a world where limited resources are used wisely for the benefit of people living now and in the years to come.

Explaining what sustainability means is a complex process.  Imagine a 3 legged stool, with the seat being a Sustainable World and the legs being Economic, Social and Environmental issues. If you cut of a bit of one leg, the stool would wobble; all the legs need to be the same length for the stool to be safe and for us all to have a good quality of life.

This concept is highlighted in our Sustainability Outcomes.

 

Eastleigh Borough Council has recognised this need for a balanced approach since 1996, when its Corporate Strategy incorporated 3 Key Initiatives of Environment, Prosperity (i.e. Economic issues) and Health (i.e. Social issues). The current Corporate Strategy continues to highlight these issues.

 

The term Sustainable Development is not a new one. Read it's history and the process by which the world can journey towards it - Agenda 21.
