(New applications and renewals)

How can I make an application to become a hackney carriage driver?

You will need to bring the following items:

• A full current driving licence that has been valid for two years prior to the date of application.  If new style, plastic card and paper counterpart
• Produce for examination a current certificate of insurance covering "for public hire and reward"
• Proof of identification: Passport, Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, 2 Utility bills showing current address
• National Insurance number proof, card or correspondence
• 2 Colour passport size photographs
• Application fee £70.00 (cash or cheque payable to EBC)
• CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check fee £36.00 (cash or cheque payable to EBC) 
• Medical form pdf completed by doctor (required for all new applications, and every 5 years thereafter).  On attaining 65 years of age a medical certificate will be required every year.
• All new applicants to be hackney carriage drivers must take and pass the EBC knowledge test.  Fee is included in the application.  First retake and subsequent tests cost £4.75
• All new applicants are to provide the name and address of 2 referees as to their character and suitability etc
