What is a Mayor?
The Mayor is the Borough’s ‘First Citizen’ and is elected
annually by fellow councillors for one year at the annual meeting
of the Council in May. The Mayor chairs the full meetings of
the Council and normally takes a non-political role to ensure fair
play.
In addition, the Mayor also represents the Council as the
Civic Head of the Borough at official functions and attends
approximately 400 events during his/her term of office. At
functions in the Borough, the Mayor takes precedence over all other
citizens. The only exception to this is when Royalty or the
Lord Lieutenant are visiting the Borough.

What are the Mayor's charities for
2009/10?
Each Mayor supports nominated charities by organising various
events to raise fund throughout the Mayoral Year. This year,
the Mayor has chosen the following charities:
- Home-Start Eastleigh
- The Rainbow Centre
- The BIG Art Project
Home-Start Eastleigh offers weekly support to
families with at least one child under five, who live in the
Borough of Eastleigh and Test Valley South who are having
family difficulties.
They help families give their children the
best start in life by supporting their parents through isolation
and loneliness, parenting difficulties, domestic abuse, substance
and alcohol misuse, inappropriate housing and many other
difficulties that young families encounter. They also help to
strengthen the relationship between parents and children and widen
community links.
Home-Start Eastleigh is funded totally by
grants and local donations.
The Rainbow Centre is a very
special place of warmth and hope where children with disabilities
go to learn how to do things such as sit up, feed themselves, learn
to stand and walk. These children mostly have cerebral palsy.
The Centre has almost 60 families attending –
a small number are adults recovering from strokes, with MS and
Parkinson’s disease. Most families come from the local area but
some from much greater distances such as Poole and Farnham.
Even though the Centre can make a huge
difference there is no financial help offered by the statutory
bodies and the Rainbow Centre has to raise half a million pounds
each and every year to keep running. It relies heavily on the
goodwill of the local community and their own fundraising
efforts.
The BIG Art Project seeks to
motivate, empower, define and inspire through art by providing
greater opportunities and a supportive environment where young
people and artists who are deaf, disabled and able can work
together to develop access to, appreciation of and
participation in the arts at the highest level. The project is
working in partnership with a Southampton based charity Artswork to
deliver the Arts Award Programme to young people via art workshops
in schools and the community.
If you would like to make a donation to the Mayor's Appeal,
please make cheques payable to 'Mayor's Appeal 2009/10' and send it
to the Mayor at the above address.
How can I nominate a charity?
To be nominated for the Appeal, please write to the Mayor’s
Office enclosing information about the charity and any planned
projects. The Mayor-Elect will look at all the information
supplied, usually in March, and you will be notified of the Mayor’s
decision.
