EDLAG
Why?
In 2002, as part of the Eastleigh
Borough Sport and Recreation Strategy, people from Bishopstoke Day
Services, Eastleigh Advocacy Project and the Hexagon Centre came to
Fleming Park Leisure Centre to discuss barriers faced by people
with a disability accessing leisure.
Areas discussed included:
- What has stopped people with disabilities from using local
facilities
- What activities they would like to take part in
- What could be done to make leisure more accessible
EDLAG aims to:
- Foster and promote all sports at all levels, providing
opportunities for recreation and competition, for all people with
physical, learning or sensory difficulties within the Borough.
- The group will be working in conjunction with Borough based
centres to enable residents to access sporting activities, both in
and out of the centres.
- Help bring down barriers that prevent people with disability
participating in sport through better:
- Access to leisure facilities
- Awareness of leisure facilities
- Specific marketing
- Access to transport
- Leisure facility staff disability awareness
- Adaptable equipment
- Specific leisure activities
- Inclusion into mainstream leisure activities
- Partnerships
Findings
Barriers to participation:
- Limitations of disability will get disheartened
- No opportunities to try
- In the past been denied for safety reasons
- Attitudes towards disabled have been restrictive
- Fear of surfaces danger aspect
- Difficult to get transport and support evenings and
weekends
- Public transport very limited
