I
Infectious Diseases/Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is caused by
consuming food or water contaminated with harmful
microorganisms. The onset of symptoms may occur
several days after eating the contaminated
food/water. Symptoms may include diarrhoea,
vomiting, nausea, fever, headaches, stomach cramps and sometimes
death.
The Environmental Health Service receives reports of food
poisoning from GP's, the
Health Protection Agency and
direct from members of the public.
When a report
is received an investigation may be conducted to find the source
and cause of
infection.
The
purpose of the investigation is to prevent the spread of the
infection.
In the year 2003 there were 296 cases
of food poisoning in the district.
If you think you are suffering from food poisoning please
contact us. If you have already visited your GP we will receive
notification of your illness and may contact you.
