Elections and Electoral
Registration
Local Election 2008
This section organises the annual canvass of all domestic
properties in the Borough to compile a revised Register of Electors
which is published on 1 December each year. We also organise
all parish, borough, county, parliamentary and European
parliamentary elections.
Elections are normally held on the first Thursday in May and
European parliamentary elections are held every five years in June,
the next one being held in June 2009.
Don't Lose Your Vote
You can only vote in elections if your name is on the register
of electors. We update the register every autumn. But after a
recent change in the law, we can also add names throughout the
year.
Moved home? Coming up to 18? Just
not on the Register?
All you have to do is fill in a
voter registration form. pdf
You have to sign your own form; someone else cannot do it for
you.
When you send us your form we will add you to our list of new
applications. Any elector can then object to your name being added
to the register. If this happens we will write to you.
If your application is not objected to, we will change your
details within 2 to 6 weeks of receiving your form. We will write
to tell you when your application is allowed.
The form gives each resident the opportunity to be
omitted from the EDITED VERSION of the Register. This can be sold
to people or companies who request it.
The FULL VERSION of the Register is used
for election purposes, for the prevention and detection of crime
and proof of residency for credit purposes.
Please remember information you have supplied for Council Tax
cannot be transferred to the Register of Electors.

Proxy Vote
You do need a reason for wishing to
vote by proxy (for example, you will be away from home on polling
day) for a particular election. The person nominated by you as your
proxy has to be formally appointed by the Electoral Registration
Officer to vote on your behalf. Your proxy must be at least 18
years old, must not be disqualified from voting and must
(a) For a Parliamentary election
be a Commonwealth
citizen or citizen of the Republic of Ireland;
(b) For a local government election
be a Commonwealth
citizen, citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a citizen of a
member country of the European Union.
If you would like to appoint someone else to vote on your behalf (a
proxy), you need to complete and return a proxy
application form and send it to the Electoral Registration Officer
at Eastleigh Borough Council. You must sign the form yourself, no
one else may sign it for you. We cannot accept e-mailed forms or
forms with electronic signatures. Please note that in signing this
form you are confirming that the person you are appointing as your
proxy is willing and able to vote on your behalf.
If you would like to appoint a proxy
either for a particular election or for all future elections,
please contact the Electoral Registration Office for further
advice. Telephone 023 8068 8110 or email elections@eastleigh.gov.uk
Your application will be acknowledged and confirmation sent that
your request to vote by post or by proxy has been registered.
