How will Eastleigh Borough Council Help?

 

Eastleigh Borough Council acts as an agent to Hampshire County Council who is the Highway Authority for the majority of roads in the county and is responsible for a wide range of services to schools including, the recent addition to its responsibility, for supporting the preparation and implementation of a School Travel Plans. However with over 500 schools in the county resources at Hampshire County Council are limited.

 

The Borough Council recognized several years ago the need to address issues related to the school run and the impact that taking children to school by car had on the efficiency of the local road network, road safety and children's health and security. It also acknowledged that traffic and transportation issues were high on local residents list of priorities, and therefore began its own programme of work encouraging schools to develop travel plans.

 

A range of different approaches have been taken by Borough Council staff to assist schools that have developed or are in the process of developing their travel plans.

 

In the main this has been an advisory role that allows the school to develop the project with assistance as and when it is required. But can be a more involved role if required especially to get the project started.

 

Hampshire County Council has also allocated Eastleigh Borough Council significant funds from the Local Transport Plan Budget to allow the implementation of initiatives both inside the school grounds and on the public highway.

 

Whilst every effort is made to assist schools that participate in the development and production of a school travel plan no guarantee can be made that funding will be available or the priority for measures being implemented as a result of the requirements of a school travel plan.
