Possible Transport and Highway Infrastructure Improvements
If the School Travel Plan surveys justify a need for
improvements to the transport and highway network surrounding the
school the Council can consider the following:
Transport and Highway
improvements
- Safer route trails - routes are marked on the pavement
including safest crossing points (logos designed by children can be
used to identify routes).
- Signing of walking and cycle routes.
- Prohibition of pavement parking.
- Moving existing obstructive street furniture.
- Improved lighting.
- Cut back trees and bushes from footpaths.
- Widening of existing footways.
- Improved pedestrian crossing facilities.
- Zebra/Pelican/Toucan crossing.
- School crossing patrol.
- School safety zone (crossing points, lower speed limits,
traffic calming and prevention of parking immediately outside
schools, this could also incorporate a 'design a sign' competition
for schoolchildren).
- On-street or off-street cycle routes.
- Changed road priorities.
- Tidal flow waiting restrictions on cycle lanes (see page 43 of
the DETR School Travel Strategies and Plans document).
- Prevention of vehicle movements at school start/finish
times.
- Road closure.
- Reduced road widths.
- Chicanes and pinch points.
- Junction improvements.
- One-way traffic system.
- Speed tables/cushions etc.
- Raised pedestrian crossing points.
- Signing.
- Lining.
- Bus shelters.
