Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and
Horton Heath
The two wards of Bishopstoke and
Fair
Oak / Horton Heath are to the north-east of the Borough and
elect seven Councillors (three for Fair Oak / Horton Heath and two
for each of the two Bishopstoke wards). The committee has 6
Members. Each ward is also covered by a Parish Council.
Fair Oak / Horton Heath is one hundred years old, whilst
Bishopstoke is still in single figures!
Some 19,700 residents live in the area, mostly as
owner-occupiers but with a significant social housing estate sited
in the centre of Bishopstoke. Much of the patch is still
open, farmed countryside and offers beautiful woodland, riverside
and country walks.
Each of the three villages, whilst closely situated, has its
own distinct identity.
Riverside in Bishopstoke (pictured left)
was the site of the ancient river carnival, a tradition
revived in 1997 by the Parish Council and now continued by local
volunteers. The village has many sites of special historic
interest as it dates back to the Domesday Book.
Fair Oak has an attractive village centre and
its own special nature reserve at Knowle Hill, maintained by local
volunteers. The community association runs an annual carnival
as well as other traditional village events such as an open air
carol service.
Horton Heath is perhaps the most rural of the
three villages. It has a lively community centre which is
used by a variety of groups throughout the week. Situated at
the most south-easterly part of the local area, it has easy access
to the M27 motorway and the excellent shopping facilities of Hedge
End.
