Eastleigh
Eastleigh is made up of three town wards electing 9
councillors to represent the interests of its 29,000
residents. At the heart of the area is the old railway town
which is now a thriving business and shopping centre employing over
3000 people. The excellent choice of shops in the
Swan
Centre is complimented by a variety of smaller outlets,
pleasant pubs and restaurants and outdoor markets on Thursdays and
Saturdays. Work has commenced on a multi-screen cinema and
leisure centre complex to adjoin the Swan Centre.
The Borough Council, through its Town Centre Manager, has
developed commercial partnerships to continually improve the
town. The area is now monitored through an extensive CCTV
system, has excellent disabled access, covered colonnades and,
through its
Town
Centre Office, provides a convenient "one stop shop" and hires
out shopmobility scooters for disabled people.
The area provides a variety of leisure venues including
The Point - an arts and
dance centre with an auditorium which can seat 300. As well
as an arts centre it is a popular focal point for community events
and is building a reputation as a conference centre.
The
Fleming
Park Leisure Centre has an extensive choice of swimming,
recreational and keep fit facilities. It is set in parkland
with bowling greens, floodlit all weather pitches, 18 hole golf
course and play facilities.
Bandstand, Leigh Road Recreation
Ground
A partnership arrangement between Eastleigh Borough Council,
Southampton University and the Football Federation has enabled the
construction of a new sports pavilion in Wide Lane which will
greatly enhance the provision of sports pitches on both grass and
artificial surfaces.
"The Hub" is also a new sports pavilion on the borders of
Bishopstoke which offers a range of sports activities and in
particular a home to a thriving Rugby Club.
In the southern part of the area is the
Lakeside Country Park with pleasant walks,
fishing, canoeing and sailing facilities. The park is
also home to a popular miniature
steam railway.
First class further education facilities are available at
Eastleigh College and Barton Peveril College providing vocational
and non-vocational courses.
Smart new offices are available, such as the new Swaythling
Housing Society building to the east of the town.
The area is served by 3 direct motorway links to the M3 and
M27, has mainline rail connections and, with Southampton
International Airport only a mile from the town centre, provides
excellent communication links with the rest of the country -
