Workplace Travel Plans
Workplace Travel Plans are a key
element of the Government's new transport policy agenda. All
employers in partnership with their employees are encouraged to
consider introducing travel plans. After all, they can reduce
staff travel costs, reduce commuting stress, lead to a healthier
workforce (certainly if they walk or cycle to work) and benefit the
local community by making a contribution to reducing peak hour
congestion.
Eastleigh Borough Council is working
closely with numerous businesses in the Borough to develop
Workplace Travel Plans. Businesses include those at the
Tollgate Business park, Hampshire Corporate Park, the Hamble Group
and a joint venture with Southampton City Council and Hampshire
County Council to assist Southampton Airport and Fords with their
coordinated approach to travel planning.
Travel Plans have also become an essential part of the
Planning process and advice is available to developers for this
purpose.
Eastleigh Borough Council has an
approved Workplace Travel Plan in place. The target for the
Civic Offices Green Commuter Plan is to reduce the number of single
occupancy car trips to and from the Civic Offices by 15% by
2005.
We are already operating a car share register with priority
parking allocated to car sharers. Cycling is encouraged by
the provision of shower and changing facilities, secure covered
cycle parking and even a mileage allowance, equivalent to that paid
to car drivers, payable for business trips undertaken by
cycle. We have three "pool" cycles available free to staff
for both business or personal use at lunchtimes.
