Criminal Records Bureau Check
The Licensing Team has a responsibility to ensure that taxi and
private hire drivers are fit and proper persons to hold such
licences, given the circumstances of their employment. In
order to assist in making such decisions, a check is made with the
Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) prior to a licence application being
determined, and thereafter on a three-yearly basis.
The legislation does not impose such a test on taxi proprietors,
private hire vehicle proprietors or private hire operators.
To this end the Licensing Department has adopted guidelines for
the grant of taxi and private hire driver's licences.
The latest information on the criminal record check process can
be obtained from the CRB's extensive website. Their guidance on
dealing with disclosure forms and the applicant's guide are of
particular interest.
